Streetwise (1984) - streamed online
For pentathlon 4 I decided to watch the film Streetwise. The film portrays the lives of nine teenagers who are living on the streets in downtown Seattle. The creator of the film, Mary Ellen Mark, was a renowned photographer. The film is a beautiful display of cinematography that really portrays the struggle that the subjects are going through.
The film doesn't really have a plot, it is more bent on showing the unadulterated life of these children. It was a piece of work that really impacted me and made me feel. When creating a documentary work, we should really focus on trying to portray the emotions of our subjects as accurately as possible. This piece also works as a journalistic piece, shining a light on the teenage homelessness without taking a defined stance on the issue. Their goal is to place the evidence before the audience, not to be inherently persuasive.
This film was a really impactful piece of art and journalism that really inspired me to dive deeper into the genre of documentary filmmaking.
