This presentation was a TED talk by Miru Kim.
She was born in Seoul, Korea, but moved to New York City in 1999 as a premed student. There, she fell in love with the city and decided to pursue an MFA instead of an MD. She wanted to look at the city closely and "dissect it." She decided that the best way to do this was artistically.
She first started taking photographs of the rats in the subway stations, eventually she began exploring the tunnels underneath the city. She fell in with groups of "urban explorers" and started to photograph the tunnels. Then she realized she wanted to put a character in the images and decided on herself. She also decided to wear no clothing in the photographs because she didn't want to have any cultural implications or time specific elements.
What really stuck me while watching this was less the photographs themselves and more her detail of the creative process. She went from just working on a project about photographing rats and evolved it into her modeling in ruins across the world.
This illustration of the creative process is something that I plan to keep in mind while creating my capstone project. The evolution of ideas and the lack of fear for switching things up will be an important quality to have while doing my capstone.
