Pentathlon 1 Semester 4: "Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool"

For my first pentathlon of the Spring semester, I decided to watch "Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool" on Netflix. The film, made by PBS, explored the life and legacy of legendary jazz musician Miles Davis.

As someone who enjoys listening to jazz, it was really interesting to see the dynamic of creating this music. It was almost as hectic and chaotic as the music itself.

Seeing how his life informed his art was especially illuminating. Davis' personal life had its ups and downs and his music evolved with it. Seeing his music evolve from albums like "Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet" to albums like "Bitches Brew" really showed a reflection of his personal life. It shows how much of themselves an artist puts into their work.

It was also super interesting hearing about how much these other famous jazz musicians revered Davis. He was such an influential force in jazz music and it can be really hard to see that without knowing the context of the time.
