For my first pentathlon of the second year, I decided to attend "New Arrivals 2021," at the STAMP Gallery on September 15, 2021. The show was put on by the Contemporary Art Purchasing Program (CAPP). The show is a collection of works purchased by CAPP this year. This show focused on "uplifting marginalized voices, such as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and female communities."
CAPP is an organization that allows students to purchase works of art for the school's Contemporary Art Collection. Students visit studios in surrounding areas and put forth proposals to their peers and a professional advisory board on works of art that they are interested in purchasing.
One of the most interesting parts of this exhibition was the focus on the curatorial aspect. There were binders laying around the gallery with accompanying text for each of the pieces. For each piece there was a brief artist bio, work description, and a short blurb on why CAPP had chosen to purchase this work and how it fit into the exhibition. This curatorial aspect is something that usually happens behind the scenes, so it was really interesting to see the process illustrated.
As someone who has really only seen the creative aspect of the art world, it was really interesting to see the other side of it and the rationale behind decisions being made when purchasing works and curating an exhibition.
